Who We Are

Church on the Square is open, affirming, hopeful and embracing of all faith journeys. We are unashamedly followers of Christ. Similarly, like Christ, we strive to be inquisitive, friendly to all and inviting of creative conversation to express thoughts and opinions, fostering understanding and formulation of definitive answers.

Our hope is to create a post-denominational community church that focuses on building our neighborhoods, no strings attached. We see the neighborhoods of Southeast Baltimore as our congregation, not just those who choose to show up for events or services. All we have is available to our community and we are here to serve. Church on the Square aspires to imitate the humble and selfless servant leadership of Jesus and we welcome you to join us.

Church on the Square is a safe haven and fully affirming to LGBTQA+ neighbors.  Our leadership represents our diversity.  Our members celebrate our diversity.  Our God rejoices in all people finding love and home here at Church on the Square.

Our Staff

Rev. Jim Hamilton

Pastoral Missioner

Jim is an Episcopal priest.  But, he has been an actor, a singer, a non-profit director and a few other embarrassing things that involved tight fitting costumes, so don't take him too seriously.  He brings all those experiences to bear here in Baltimore, especially his shamelessness.  He is in charge of serving the neighborhood as pastor and community organizer.  If you have questions about spirituality, organizing a group to respond to a need or have any theological conundrums, Hamilton is your guy. Jim lives in Canton with his son Teddy.

Rev. Amy Sens

Community Missioner

As Community Missioner at Church on the Square, Rev. Amy Sens encourages new and deepening connections among community members, growing a fabric of connection and care. Amy is graduate of the University of Delaware and Harvard Divinity School, and is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. Before coming to Church on the Square, she was a new church start pastor for six:eight UCC, working to connect young adults to each other, to God, and to making a difference.

In the course of developing six:eight's unique music style, Amy fell in love with bluegrass, leading to the writing and editing of her hymn collection The New Bluegrass Hymnal. More recently she has taken up the upright bass to keep the hootenanny jumpin'.  Some of Amy's favorite writers include Anne Lamott, Wendell Berry, Walter Brueggemann, Brian McLaren and Margaret Wheatley. She lives in Southwest Baltimore with her wife Heather, daughter Anne, and their wonderful cat Malcolm.

Vaugh Vigil

As deacon at Church on the Square, Vaughn is focused on helping us develop a culture of service and outreach to our neighbors. Most recently, this has included bringing together resources to feed our neighbors in the midst of COVID-19. He has also been instrumental in developing connections between Church on the Square and Episcopal churches in Cuba. In his professional life, Vaughn has worked in database management and IT. He has been an ongoing driver for improvements and care for our building.

Kristen Toedtman

Music Director

Kristen Toedtman is a versatile performer, composer and full-time musician, leading her own band and choir singing original bluesy pop songs, excelling in ensemble singing with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, appearing on numerous soundtracks (Frozen, Big Hero 6, Minions, Godzilla), soloing with the Master Chorale, Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra and the Corona del Mar Festival Orchestra, and appearing as back-up singer with various artists including Duncan Sheik and David Poe. She is known as the side woman for The Brendan Hines, with whom she toured on electric bass (and voice) opening up for The Milk Carton Kids. She has collaborated with the artist Lita Albuquerque composing site-specific works. In addition, she has shared the stage with Barbra Streisand, David Foster Wallace, Seth McFarlane, John C Reilly and more from the Hollywood Bowl and the Walt Disney Concert Hall to the storied Hotel Cafe, the Bootleg Theater and packed, sweaty warehouses with The Baltimore Afrobeat Society, of which she is a founding member.

Kristen is excited to be a leader on the Church on the Square team.  She is called to welcome all into song, create sacred space and entice people to make their own music.
